Sometimes, as we go on with our lives, we feel like there is something missing. Even though things are going 'the way they should be', we cannot help but feel uneasy and dissatisfied, unable to put a finger on exactly what the reason is.
Yatora, like many of us, was bored with his mundane life. That was, until one day, he was invited to join the art club by a strange classmate and saw a piece of artwork by a senior that stirred up his feelings. Soon after, he drew his own artwork too - a picture of a blue morning in Shibuya - which stirred his feelings up even more. This series of events eventually led him to make a decision that'll change the direction of his life - to go to Tokyo University of Arts.
Having a dream and going after that. Pursuing a passion. A lot of times, these concepts are like a teenage romance. At first, it makes your heart beat and you are ready to give up on everything for it - family, a secure career and whatnot. However, being able to finally pursue your dream is not the guarantee of happily ever after, nor it is the end. In fact, this is just the beginning.
Yatora is a hardworker who knows how to give his all, even to the point of breaking down. Ryuji is struggling with identity crisis and their family's disapproval. Yotasuke, who is thought to be 'born talented'. Kuwana, whose whole family was a part of Tokyo University of Arts which put immense pressure on her to be one too. As they continue to run towards one destination, I keep wondering. Will they make it or will they not? Will they stick around or give up? Even though their destination for now is the university, that is just another new beginning. We see as they head into the unknown - whereas the ones who are left behind get ready for another new beginning that awaits them.
The journey of pursuing one's dream is not a walk in park, nor it is romantic, all flower and roses. It takes hard work and the ability to endure even when the intial passion wears off. It takes blood, sweat and tears. The journey does not end in a fixed destination. Dreaming is not an easy way out from reality. It can be, in fact, throw you in a harsher reality than taking a traditional route. Blue Period portrays that truth without sugarcoating. However, it also shows that even though it was hard and exhausting a lot of times, through art the void in Yatora's life was finally filled.
I watched this anime shortly after my own university entrance examination. Their struggle was in no way less than my own struggles. They attended cram school for art, practiced day and night and still fell short.I highly recommend listening to the song Gunjou by YOASOBI that is inspired by the manga from which the anime is adapted. My friend recommended this song to me and this song is actually the reason I watched this anime. The song sums up Yatora perfectly.
